5 Ways To Make Sure You Hire The Right Contractor

Choosing the right contractor is one of the most important parts of any renovation, and can determine the result of the renovation. To make this process easier, today's post shares our best tips for hiring the best contractor for your renovation.

1. Get recommendations from family and friends.

If you know anyone that recently went through a renovation, ask them about their experiences with their contractor. They can help you decide whether or not you should be working with the same contractor or if it's best for you to explore other options.

2. Check that your contractor(s) and subcontractor(s) are licensed to carry out their assigned tasks.

Always ask for copies of their certifications to perform their tasks, and make sure that they have insurance. This protects you from being liable in case of any injuries or accidents.

3. Meet with your contractor before starting the project and ask questions.

Before you agree to let a contractor work on your home or commercial project, meet with the contractor and discuss your ideas. They can provide you with tips that are best suited to your renovation based on their experience. You can also ask questions and raise your concerns. Any skilled contractor should be able to adequately answer your questions and give you peace of mind.

Some questions you can ask are:

  • How will you be communicating with me throughout this project?
  • What items need to be moved in order for work to be done?
  • What is their payment schedule?
  • How many subcontractors will be working on this project?
  • How long will the renovation take?
  • Do they provide detailed written contracts?

4. Use your intuition.

When meeting with potential contractors, go with your gut. A contractor's personality will impact the management and outcome of the project. A contractor that meshes well with you and sees your vision will be a better option.

5. Look at examples of their past work or samples.

It's important to know the quality of the work being done in your home. You can request to look at examples of their previous work or visit showrooms and look at samples. These can give you an idea of the quality of the work and/or materials.
